Titration: definition in chemistry
Titration: A laboratory method for finding the concentration of a solution by reacting it with a measured volume of a solution of known concentration.
A known volume of the unknown solution is placed in a flask, and the standard solution is added from a burette until the reaction is just complete, which is shown by an indicator changing color or by a pH meter. From the volume used and the balanced equation, the unknown concentration can be calculated. Besides acid–base titrations, chemists use redox, precipitation and complexometric titrations, for example to measure water hardness.
Examples
- Finding the acetic acid content of vinegar with sodium hydroxide and phenolphthalein
- 25.0 mL of NaOH neutralized by 20.0 mL of 0.100 M HCl is 0.0800 M
- Measuring vitamin C in juice with iodine solution
- Measuring calcium in hard water with EDTA
