Solution: definition in chemistry
Solution: A homogeneous mixture in which one or more substances (solutes) are dissolved evenly in another (the solvent).
In a solution the dissolved particles are individual molecules or ions, far too small to see, to settle out or to be removed by filtering. A solution in water is called an aqueous solution and is marked (aq) in chemical equations. A solution that holds as much solute as it can at a given temperature is saturated, and one that holds less is unsaturated.
Examples
- Salt water — sodium chloride dissolved in water
- Soda — carbon dioxide and sugar dissolved in water
- Air — oxygen and other gases dissolved in nitrogen
- Brass — zinc dissolved in solid copper
