Solute: definition in chemistry
Solute: The substance that is dissolved in a solution, usually the component present in the smaller amount.
A solute can be a solid, liquid or gas, and when it dissolves its particles separate and spread evenly through the solvent. How much solute can dissolve, its solubility, depends on the solute, the solvent and the temperature. Dissolved solutes change the properties of the solvent, for example by raising its boiling point and lowering its freezing point.
Examples
- Sugar in sweetened tea
- Carbon dioxide gas in sparkling water
- Salt in seawater, about 35 grams per kilogram
- Ethanol in wine, about 12% by volume
