The electron configuration of Oganesson (Og) is [Rn] 5f14 6d10 7s2 7p6. Its 118 electrons are arranged in shells as 2, 8, 18, 32, 32, 18, 8.
Protons, neutrons and electrons in Oganesson
A neutral Oganesson atom has 118 protons and 118 electrons. Most Oganesson atoms have about 176 neutrons: the atomic mass rounded to 294, minus the atomic number 118.
Neutrons are approximate: atoms of the same element can have different numbers of neutrons (isotopes). Atomic number and mass
How many valence electrons does Oganesson have?
8
Oganesson has 8 valence electrons in its outermost shell, shell 7. These are the electrons involved in chemical bonding.

Molar mass of Oganesson
294 g/mol
One mole of Oganesson atoms (6.022 × 10²³ atoms) has a mass of 294 grams. Use this value to convert between grams and moles.
Oganesson facts
- Oganesson is only the second element named after a living person, after seaborgium.
- A 1999 claim from Berkeley to have made element 118 was withdrawn in 2001 after the data were found to have been fabricated.
- Oganesson (Og) has atomic number 118. It was discovered in 2002.
Position in the periodic table
Oganesson is element 118, in period 7 and group 18 of the periodic table, in the p-block.
Uses of Oganesson
Oganesson has no uses outside research; only a handful of atoms have ever been detected, and each decays in about a millisecond. Scientists study it to test how relativistic effects change chemistry. Although it sits in the noble gas group, calculations suggest it may be a solid at room temperature and could be more reactive than the other noble gases.
Who discovered Oganesson?
A team of Russian and American scientists led by Yuri Oganessian at Dubna, working with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, first observed oganesson in 2002 by bombarding californium with calcium ions and announced it in 2006. It is named after Yuri Oganessian, a pioneer of superheavy element research.
Where does the name come from?
Oganesson honors Yuri Oganessian, the Russian-Armenian physicist who led the discovery of several of the heaviest elements. Its -on ending matches the other noble gases, and like seaborgium it was named after a living scientist.

How many protons, neutrons and electrons does Oganesson have?
A neutral Oganesson atom has 118 protons and 118 electrons. Most Oganesson atoms have about 176 neutrons: the atomic mass rounded to 294, minus the atomic number 118.
How many valence electrons does Oganesson have?
Oganesson has 8 valence electrons in its outermost shell, shell 7. These are the electrons involved in chemical bonding.
What is the molar mass of Oganesson?
The molar mass of Oganesson is 294 g/mol. This is the same number as its atomic mass, 294 u.
Is Oganesson a metal?
Oganesson is a synthetic superheavy element, so too few atoms have been made to measure whether it behaves as a metal.
Is Oganesson radioactive?
Yes. Oganesson has no stable isotopes, so all of its atoms are radioactive and eventually decay into other elements.
Where is Oganesson on the periodic table?
Oganesson is element 118, in period 7 and group 18 of the periodic table, in the p-block.
