Electron configuration quiz
Read an electron configuration in noble-gas shorthand and pick the element it belongs to. It is the fastest way to get comfortable with s, p, d and f subshells.
Best: —
How it works
Each of the 10 questions shows a configuration such as [Ne] 3s² 3p⁴ and four elements to choose from. Pick a level to practice the first 20, the first 36 or all 118 elements; your best score is saved on this device.
Play it three ways: a classic round of 10 questions, a 60-second speed round (25 right answers earns a star), or survival, where you keep going until you miss three.
Tips
- The noble gas in brackets is the end of the previous period: [Ne] means the element is in period 3.
- Add the electrons outside the brackets to the noble gas’s atomic number to get the element’s atomic number.
- The last subshell tells you the block: a configuration ending in p belongs to a p-block element.
