Blank periodic table quiz: where does each element go?
Practice locating elements on an empty periodic table, with no symbols to help you. Knowing where an element sits tells you its group, its period and its likely properties at a glance, which is the real skill behind reading the table.

How it works
Each round has 10 questions: you are given an element and click its square on a blank periodic table. You see right away whether you picked the right square, and your best score is saved in your browser. Choose the first 20, the first 36 or all 118 elements before you start.
Play it three ways: a classic round of 10 questions, a 60-second speed round (25 right answers earns a star), or survival, where you keep going until you miss three.
Tips
- Learn the shape first: period 1 has 2 elements, periods 2 and 3 have 8, periods 4 and 5 have 18, and periods 6 and 7 have 32, counting the rows below the table.
- Use the atomic number to find the row: elements 3–10 are in period 2, 11–18 in period 3, 19–36 in period 4 and 37–54 in period 5.
- For main-group elements, the number of valence electrons gives the group: 1 or 2 on the left, and valence electrons plus 10 for groups 13 to 18 on the right.
- Lanthanides (57–71) and actinides (89–103) go in the two separate rows at the bottom.
