Element spelling quiz: type the name or the symbol
No answer options here: type the element’s name when you see its symbol, and its symbol when you see its name. It is the closest practice to a written test, and it catches the spelling mistakes multiple choice lets slip.

How it works
Questions alternate between symbol to name and name to symbol, with the atomic number as a hint. Press Enter to check each answer. Choose 10 questions, as many as you can in 60 seconds, or keep going until you miss three. British spellings such as aluminium, caesium and sulphur count as correct.
Play it three ways: a classic round of 10 questions, a 60-second speed round (25 right answers earns a star), or survival, where you keep going until you miss three.
Tips
- Watch the classic misspellings: fluorine (not flourine), phosphorus (not phosphorous) and manganese (not magnesium, which is a different element).
- Symbols are not case-sensitive here, but on paper the second letter is always lowercase: Co is cobalt, CO is carbon monoxide.
- Many names follow patterns: most metal names end in -ium, and every halogen name ends in -ine.
- If you are unsure, type what you would write in a test, then study the correction. Mistakes you fix stick better than lucky guesses.
